Former Wichita East running back Bryce Brown might be headed for Kansas State, but he wont be receiving his release from Tennessee.Tennessee coach Derek Dooley told the Knoxville News Sentinel on Friday that he will not release Brown from his scholarship.Brown doesnt need a release to transfer to another school, but he cant receive a scholarship from a new school this year without a release.Read more
- Insulation fire at Kapaun Mount Carmel put out quickly
Firefighters were called to Kapaun Mount Carmel High School this afternoon when insulation caught fire while workers were repairing the roof, Wichita fire Capt. Scott Ledy said.He said the fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries. The fire was limited to electrical systems in a small room in the cafeteria area that houses computer equipment, he said. The ventilation system carried smoke into the building, which prompted firefighters to search for an additional source of flames, but they found none, Ledy said.Read more
- Out-of-state group's ad attack on Hartman and Schodorf moves to TV
An Ohio third-party political group has moved from radio to television in attacking Kansas 4th District congressional candidates Jean Schodorf and Wink Hartman.The television ads by Common Sense Issues, which began surfacing today, are similar to radio spots the group ran earlier in the week. The source of funding for the ad campaign is unknown.Federal Election Commission filings show the group has now spent at least $76,600 opposing Hartman and Schodorf, and supporting Mike Pompeo.Read more

EL DORADO — Doug and Valerie Herrman made their first appearance in court today to hear the felony theft charge against them alleging fraudulent receipt of an adoption subsidy for their son Adam for years after he disappeared.The Herrmans now face a Sept. 23 preliminary hearing on the theft charge.They each have received a court-appointed attorney after filing affidavits saying their assets and income are limited.Read more
- Burglar dies after breaking into house
A burglar in north Wichita apparently caused his death today by slitting his wrist on a windowpane as he broke into the house, police said.The 38-year-old man was apparently trying to break into a house in the 2100 block of North Park Place, said Lt. Ken Landwehr. The homeowner was not home at the time. Police found blood on a door and on a side window. The dead man was found three blocks away, he said. Landwehr declined to release the man's name. He said police are classifying the death, for now, as a public accident.Read more
